THIS AGGREGATE OF IMAGES THAT IS THE UNIVERSE (CLOUDS)
text based video, 30 min., 2025
currently in production
Some images inform our sight. Others function as infrastructures. They calibrate machines, surveil our planet, predict futures. Compiled into enormous datasets, they operate in the background of algorithmic networks, software applications, and statistical evaluations. Rather than visually representing the world, their codes serve to count it, measure it, and format it in their own likeness.
This Aggregate of Images That Is the Universe (CLOUDS) (2025) proposes a text-based approach towards the human undertaking behind these vast image collections and the “invisual” universe they create. Using language to generate mental images, the film talks about the working processes that are performed daily in the back office of so-called ‘artificial intelligence’. In defiance of the imposed invisibility of workers and extractive infrastructures, the video traces technological and human glitches that embody the potential of resistance. Considering the Cloud not only as an infrastructural system but as an opaque matter and a realm of imagination, the work explores its potential to disrupt, to obscure, and to open up spaces beyond computability.
