"Something that is no longer there becomes apparent, temporalities overlap and generate tension between presence and representation. By recording the material traces via a hand-held scanner, Newkryta not only illustrates the physical dimensions, but also discusses them with regard to the production of the image itself. The scanner is tied to the movements of the artist´s hand and produces single shots that are subsequently assembled into an overall image. This remains fragmentary, creates a moment of distance, and points to the indirectness of the medium." Juliane Bischoff, 2017
In Carnal Thoughts the haptic perception of blankets and bed sheets, daily inscribing themselves in our bodies as a sensual memory, is translated into a montaged image. This visual transformation of the bodily memory is realized with a hand-held scanner thus assuming a perspective of the hand rather than the eyes, creating a picture that functions by the logic of touch instead of the logic of the gaze.
